What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a tool used in traditional Chinese medicine where hair-fine needles are inserted into certain points of the body to help elicit a healing response.

Acupuncture points are placed along meridians/channels in the body. These meridians have a close relationship with certain organs of our body and are also named as such. There has been a recent discovery that proves the existence of these meridians through our interstitial connective tissue. We have found that about 80% of acupuncture points are located at the same point of intermuscular or intramuscular connective tissue planes. This helps to explain how each channel can flow from the top of our head to the tips of our fingers and toes and vice versa.

Acupuncture also works closely with your autonomic nervous system. When a needle is placed in the body, it sends a message to the brain that helps take you from a sympathetic state (fight or flight) and puts you in a parasympathetic state (rest and digest). Because of this response, acupuncture works great for stress and anxiety.

Is there anything I should do before my initial exam?

Please fill out all electronic paperwork before our first appointment. This helps save time and allows us to dive right into our session without the distraction of filling out forms.

How can I get the most out of my treatment?

It is most important to follow all instructions given to you to ensure you get the most out of each session.

Acupuncture uses your body's energy to heal itself. Because of this, it is important to eat something light before coming in for treatment.

Please come in loose and comfortable clothing. If you choose to wear long pants or long sleeves, please make sure they are loose enough to raise above the knee or elbow.

What are the benefits of taking an herbal prescription?

Herbal prescriptions are tailored to you. They are meant to address your specific pattern at the time of treatment. It is important to follow all instructions, including dosage and amount of time taken.

Unlike a prescription you may receive from your Western medicine physician, herbal medicine works to treat the root cause of your symptoms. Because of this, it may take a couple of days before you notice the effects of the herbs.
